    I've read 6 of those!

I think my favorite detective is Anna Pigeon in the Nevada Barr national parks series. She just seems so real; I think Barr does a wonderful job with her.

  2. Nice list. My favorite Christie detective is Mr. Parker Pyne. :)

I was a huge Nancy Drew Fan.

Ya know what is good? The books by JD Roberts aka Nora Roberts. All th titles are something in Death. Like Born in Death, Memory in Death.
    They are very enjoyable.

  6. I just deleted the previous comment because I didn't notice that it was hubby's blogger acct. that was on and I said: I loved Nancy Drew back in High School ;) Her adventures with her girlfriends always thrilled me. Then later on , I progressed into Perry Mason novels, and more recently, Robert Ludlum. Just love mysteries!

I love to read but sadly haven't read any of those! Time to go check them out! :) Have a wonderful week!

  8. Great list..Im sure hubby has read some of them

  9. I enjoy the "Cat Who" books, too. They are kinda like the anti-Scarpetta stories: slow-moving, non-violent, and filled with charming, wholesome characters. Not that I'm not hooked on Kay, too. It's just sometimes it's good to take a peaceful journey to Moose County.

Cool list! I read Nancy Drew when I was a kid, and I love Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple.

Happy TT, and thanks for visiting my blog!

  11. I love Nancy Drew! I collected all of the originals as a kid and still have them. I've also discovered Kay Tracey, a Nancy "knockoff" but they're still entertaining. Oh and Agatha Christie is awesome too!

I've also been into Carrie Bebris' Mr and Mrs Darcy Mysteries (a spin off series of Pride and Prejudice).

    ReplyDelete
  12. I think my favourite detective growing up was Trixie Belden. :) Trixi is still my nick name with my parents as a result. I also love Nero Wolfe and Archie. :)

    ReplyDelete
  13. I read a lot of those. Have you tried out Rochelle Krich? She writes about Orthodox Jewish women -- two series: Jessie Drake and Molly Blume. Really neat slice-of-life stuff without being preachy.

    Happy TT, Tink!

detective books are not my cup of tea but in my youth (this sounds silly from the mouth of 29 year old man)
I've read Agatha Cristie and Doyle.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I love Nancy Drew. I love her. Of course I am partial to Hercule Poirot!

Great list of detectives. Happy TT and thanks for dropping by mine.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Scarpetta, Millhone and Anna Pigeon (mentioned by your first commenter) are my favorites!

I've read most of these. Several were big favorites of mine as a teenager: Agatha Christie and Earl Stanley Gardner. Earlier than that I was a Nancy Drew and Hardy boys' fan and read everything I could.

When living in London, I actually attended a writer's talk given by Colin Dexter. His books are good, though the TV series is also fun.

Great list. Mine is up too.

I have never been a fan of mysteries though I do consider myself an avid reader I tend to gravitate more toward the speculative fiction selections.

  19. I know Sherlock Holms and Nancy Drew, but none of the others. I guess I need to read more detective books. :-)

Nancy Drew and Agatha Christie. Thanks for taking me down memory lane. Love your header this week - BTW.

Thanks for visiting my TT - all about making small changes for a sustainable future.

  21. I love your list--I love books, too! When I was a kid, I read every Nancy Drew mystery and every Hardy Boys mystery.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Have you tried Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs series? They are quite good. Oh, and Nora Roberts psuedonym is J.D. Robb, and the series is addictive.

    ReplyDelete
  23. You and my mother would get along famously. I'm not really into crime, but I must admit I do enjoy the occasional Agatha Christie

    ReplyDelete
  24. One of my favorites is Nero Wolfe by Rex Stout. Happy TT!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I love Agatha Christie's books, and Sherlock Holmes and Nancy Drew. Some good reading here.

    My Thursday 13 is up.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I loved Nancy Drew when I was younger. I recently discovered Kay Scarpetta and enjoy that series.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I love Sue Grafton and I love books! This is a great list. :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oooh, I love mysteries. It all started with a big box of Nancy Drew books borrowed from my cousin. I love Miss Marple & Hercule Poirot, Sherlock Holmes and Kinsey Millhone. I'm getting a little tired of Koko & Yum-Yum, though I still buy the books. And I've only read a handful of Brother Cadfael.

I love Midnight Louie--in the Carole Nelson Douglas series (Catnip, Pussyfoot, then alphabetical from Cat on a Blue Monday through Cat in a Red Hot Rage), and will second Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe and J. D. Robb's Eve Dallas.

If you don't mind some fantasy along with your mystery, I highly recommend Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden.

I can't believe nobody's mentioned Stephanie Plum yet--though she doesn't really solve cases, so much as stumble into solutions. LOL

Oh, geez. I just thought of a dozen more to recommend, at least. Maybe I should do a TT of my own on the subject. If you really, really want recommendations, here's a list of the mysteries I've read in the past 2.5 years, with links to what I thought of them.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I've only heard of Sherlock Holmes and Nancy Drew... Oops :)

  30. Anonymous17/5/07 11:19

I hate to disagree, but I find Agatha unreadable, though I do enjoy movies based on her stories. And I couldn't get into Dexter's books. Maybe that was because I had seen the tv shows beforehand.

I really enjoyed your list. I should read more mysteries. I should read more of a lot of things. Check out my list to find out why! :) Happy TT.
    Smile brightly.

  32. My TT is up, it's about lilies.
    http://alasandra2003.blogspot.com/2007/05/thursday-thirteen-20.html

Sherlock Holmes is my all time favourite dective. But thanks for reminding me about Brother Cadfael, I have read his books and enjoyed them so I would like to read more.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I have to admit, I am not much of a fan of detective stories. But I guess you can't go wrong with Miss Marple or Hercule Poirot. I've actually read a few of those in my youth.
One series I do like however is the one by Rita Mae Brown and her cat Sneaky Pie. In my opinion they are definitely way more entertaining than Jackson-Braun's clicheed and foreseeable The Cat Who Did Whatever stories. But there you go, thankfully tastes differ.411mmc

  34. Kellerman's child psychologist who is always solving the crime that traumatized his patient. I think his name is Alex. The psychologist, I mean. It has been a awhile, he's probably got a half dozon new ones out.

Alexander McCall Smith does more than one detective series. I like the elderly lady in Friends, Lovers, Chocolates.

I loved Nancy Drew as a kid too!! And Perry Mason also.

Wanted to say thanx for visiting my TT over the past couple weeks when my cranky computer prevented me from doing much visiting myself. This week I'm putting the visitor's from the last two TT's at the top of my to visit list.

In an attempt to alleviate a nasty mood, brought on my Tuesday's failure of the library levy, a mood which i did not want to share with TTers, I shared a joke instead this week.

  35. Great list of detectives... It was Dr Alex Delaware by Jonathan Kellerman that Joy renee was after. Also Faye Kellerman writes a great series about Peter Decker/Rina Lazarus...

And I'll second the recommendation about Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Pie - much better than the Cat Who Books in my opinion.

And if like mysteries set in other time periods check out Kerry Greenwood's Pyrne Fisher stories set in Melbourne in the 1910-1920s.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I used to love mystery books as a child, but don't read them much any more. I was a big fan of Nancy Drew and E.S. Gardner. Happy TT

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'd not read any of the Philip Marlowe stories till a couple of weeks ago. Now I'm hooked.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Great list! Some old favorites and some new ones.

I would've added Nero Wolfe, Lord Peter Wimsey, Archie Goodwin, Roderick Allyn and Father Brown.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh!! I've enjoyed alot of those (and, alot of those mentioned by previous posters!), most especially Marple, Poirot and Holmes!

Might I venture to add Archy McNally, created by Lawrence Sanders, as well as his Edward X. Delaney series...both great characters!

And, my favorite 'eligible undertaker', Hitchcock Sewell from Tim Cockey's Hearse books.

    Great list!! Happy Reading!

  40. We share a love of mysteries...I knew 10 of the 13!

    ReplyDelete
  44. My sister - also a Monkey - loves The Cat Who mysteries. I loved Nancy Drew books as a girl, and TV's Cadfael as an adult. My mom can't get enough of the TV Hercule Poirot. A bit of everyone out of your list in my family!

    ReplyDelete
  45. yup - loved me some Nancy and Trixie Belden as well. Does Stephanie Plum count even though she's a bounty hunter... sorta..sometimes...

    ReplyDelete
  46. Nancy Drew!!!! Love, love, love Nancy Drew!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Great books, I think our shelves must look similar.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Do you read Anne Perry?
    Lyn from Bloggin' Outloud

    ReplyDelete
  49. I had the biggest crush on Perry Mason when I was a little girl! That Cadfael book sounds neat! I'll have to put it on my TBR list.

My favorite detective is Vicky Nelson from Blood Ties. No, I haven't read the books yet. :D Yes I absolutely intend to!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Oh! You've gotta try GA McKevitt and Diane Mott Davidson!!

Miss Marple and Poirot! Love it, Love it, Love it!

Now, I love Veronica Mars! HAve you ever seen her show?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Ooh I adored Nancy Drew!! I haven't read any in ages, but you know, I'd probably still like them now too. ;o)

    Happy Thursday.

    ReplyDelete
  54. You had some of my favorites in there. Sherlock Holes, Nancy Drew and I liked Ellery Queen. :o)

    ReplyDelete
  55. You've tapped most of mine. I think Brother Cadfael is my favorite. But I also like Lord Peter Wimsy (I think that's how it's spelled).

    Happy TT!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I love your list. I am a Scarpetta fan too. For fun you should read Patricia Sprinkle's series with MacLaren Yarborough as the protagonist. They are set in a little town in Georgia and are very enjoyable.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I'm not really into mystery but you covered alot of bases with this one.

    Happy TT

Be well and enjoy the day

    ReplyDelete
  58. loved Kinsey Milhone. I've heard those cat mysteries are really good.
    TT

  59. Sherlock Holmes, my favorite! All great books - LC @ onthelakefront@blogspot.com

  60. Anonymous18/5/07 05:30

I haven't read any detective novels yet though I fully intend too in the near future. It sounds silly but I love to watch Wishbone and the mystery stories presented on there has really drawn me to Sherlock Holmes.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I love a good mystery, too. I have way too many to solve in my own home to get to read about fake ones, though. "Who ate my last cheesecake bite?" "Who's responsible for the cigarette in the bathroom?" "Where is the remote!?"

    ReplyDelete
  62. Anonymous18/5/07 06:13

    Nancy Drew, of course.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I love many of these too.

I would add, Travis McGee by John D. MacDonald. these are all written in the 60's, 70's and 80's...and he lives on a boat in Florida. the stories combine action, murder, sexy ladies and insightful commentary on the environment and the human condition. The covers are a riot

I like Janet Evanovitch's character Stephanie Plum. she says things like "If breasts were money, she'd be Bill Gates."

I love many on your list including Sherlock Holmes and Kay Scarpetti.

I also like tv detectives like Columbo and Bobby Goren and the series Prime Suspect with Helen Mirren.

My list is ready...even though I was very late this week...it is short and sweet:

    http://gnosticminx.blogspot.com/2007/05/there-is-no-spoon.html

(plus, Tink, I did a book review of a diet concept, I'd love it if you had tie to check it out and share your impressions)

    ReplyDelete
  64. I've read a few of those. "The Cat Who..." series is what actually got me hooked on siamese, of which I am now owned by two! I may have to check out a few of these other ones....

    ReplyDelete
  65. I accidentally deleted several posts including my latest TT. Thanks for dropping by.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I'm late catching up with all the Thursday Thirteens this week, but great list. I love mysteries and detectives, too...and there's none better than Nancy Drew! :) I'm a big fan of the Kay Scarpetta series, too but my fave would have to be the Alex Delaware novels from Jonathan Kellerman. GREAT reads every single one of them.

    Jessica The Rock Chick

  67. Other good ones if you like fiesty female detactives......Lauren Henderson's books about Sam Jones, gothette detective from Camden, such as 'Freeze my Margarita', and 'The Black Rubber Dress', and Val McDermid's Kate Branningan Novels, set in Manchester, like 'Clean Break' and 'Blue Genes'......

Quirky ones set in Manchester....right for the period (I lived there), and funny Nicholas Blincoe - 'Jello Salad' and Acid Casuals'
