TT #93: online pet peeves

TT93

Thirteen online pet peeves
I like surfing, reading my favourite blogs, browse websites, etc. Sometimes bloggers and/or website designers (amateur AND pro) don't make it very easy to enjoy their work...

  • pop-ups – I have pop-up killers, but still I get them from time to time. Even if the content is appealing I click them away.
  • pop-unders – See pop-ups
  • websites that automatically play music – I play my own music, thank you very much. Please add an immediately visible button to kill it! Or even better, make it an option to play in the first place.
  • too much advertising – I don’t mind ads, my blog has them too. If I have to search through the ads to find the actual content, I give up very quickly though.
  • unreadable text – Too little, unreadable font, colour… If you want me to read your website at least make the text clear!
  • too busy background – It’s a BACKground, people! It shouldn’t get all the attention. If you really want that lively picture on the background, set the text in a box with plain background.
  • page loading too slow because of content – I know you want to show everything you got, but if the loading takes too long I’m off to the next site.
  • dead or wrong links – I hate those! I double-check every link I use and click old links regularly to see if the pages still exist. If you ever find one nevertheless, please let me know!
  • writing in all caps – Especially when used with lots of !!!!!!! You’re screaming! No need to scream online. I won't listen to real-life screaming, so I won't read online screaming.
  • stealing content from others – If you use content from another site, ask permission or at least mention the source. It’s unfair to get credit for something you didn’t create. And it is even more stupid if you copy and paste text without removing the language errors.
  • use of unknown abbreviations – Everybody knows what LOL means, IMHO is fairly well-known too, but otherwise: if you use an abbreviation, explain it at least once after the first time it occurs in your text.
  • back button switched off – I use the back button of my browser quite a lot. Why switching it off? I hate it when websites do that. I know there’s a solution (use the little arrow next to the back button), but still!
  • long text without structure – If something seems to be interesting I’m willing to read a long text but without use of paragraphs, new lines, etc. that’s hard! Make it a bit easier for your audience!

~*~*~*~

The purpose of the meme is to get to know everyone who participates a little bit better every Thursday. Visiting fellow Thirteeners is encouraged! If you participate, leave the link to your Thirteen in others comments. It’s easy, and fun! Be sure to update your Thirteen with links that are left for you, as well! I will link to everyone who participates and leaves a link to their 13 things. Trackbacks, pings, comment links accepted

Unfortunately the TT website doesn't exist anymore. That's a pity, but I'll keep on doing TT's and I hope everyone else will. The link to the code doesn't work (comes automatically with Mr. Linky). Leaving your link is extra important now, so please do!
update: There's a temporary solution: Thursday-13!

  1. Wonderful idea to keep Thursday 13 going. I have a lot of these pet peeves too. I was just complaining to the hubby about blogs that have music. It drives me crazy. Happy TT to you!

Yep, yep. These all bug me too. However, I am lazy, and don't check links in old posts, and have an ongoing war with wordpress over my blogroll.

My thoughts exactly, especially the first 7 or so.

I just posted a new TT TToo.

  4. Thanks for putting up the linkback. I'm glad to see so many TTers continuing. Mine will be up in the a.m.

As for Pet Peeves--I agree 100%

  5. We love music and don't mind being introduced to new stuff but hate being force-fed music on blogs! It is nice when the Off button is easy to find. Thanks for visiting our blog - we just posted our Thursday Thoughts.

I agree about everything, especially the music! Dead links and wrong links I may be guilty of though. =(

    I'm glad you're still doing TTs! =)

  7. Disabled right clicking... I appreciate that you're trying to protect your content, but I use my right-click menu to navigate ALOT. If I can't right-click to open in a new tab, I'm probably just going to leave.

Also, lots of flashing things, anything to follow the cursor around/change it's shape, and the "snow" or flower petals that fall down the page. All they do is make it slow for your page to load and annoying to read.

  8. Yes, I agree on those too! They almost made it to the thirteen. :)

  9. Those are good ones! I also don't like sites with a lot of blinking and flashing stuff. And I am very tired of that ad "Where IS my granddaughter?...."

  10. Thanks for putting up Mr. Linky. Hopefully the hundreds of TTers will find each other again.

oh, and forgot to add... sites that load music automatically have me scrambling for the little X on the tab. (apart from MySpace of course)

  13. I REALLY hate those who steal content. I mean it is just wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Oh, you've got a good list going here. These things bug me too.

    ReplyDelete
  15. AMEN!

happy tt! mine is up at the lost world too!

  16. I agree with you on nearly all points ! Especially blogs with music, that makes me climbing up the wall ! When I am in a hotel or if somebody sleeps and suddenly I get this music ! As English is not my mothertongue I have some difficulties with abreviations I don't know what IMHO means. What I don't like either is a dark background with dark letters on it and you can hardly read !

  17. IMHO = In My Humble Opinion
English is not my native tongue either, that's what makes abbreviations difficult.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Excellent list! Pop-ups/unders, auto-music and excessive exclamation points irritate me as well.

    Thanks for visiting!

  19. I have the same pet peeves. I have a slower connection speed than most, so a lot of graphics really slow me down.

  20. We woke up and the Thursday Thirteen was gone. Will it be back? No one knows. But for now here's a little spot on the web to bring us all together again. www.thursday-13.com

  21. Quite a few of those are my pet peeves as well. Music I dislike (and I don't even like saying that) because oftentimes I read blogs at work and have to scramble to turn down the speakers!

    ReplyDelete
  22. My latest pet peeve, which is just a very recent development, is that some of the comment pages on blogger blogs are not showing the word verification letters, and when I type random letters in the box hoping it will bring up the image, it blanks out the comment and leaves me fuming! I don't know how they did their comment boxes, but they should stick with the tried and true if they want to hear from me! (I am sure they are waiting with baited breath for that opportunity, too!) :)

    Happy TT!

  23. You totally nailed all my pet peeves, lol! Especially the dead links. I HATE when you go to a site that you believe is full of great sources, only to find 3/4 of the links are dead. Very frustrating.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I share a lot of those pet peeves with you!

Nice to see so many people carrying on with TT. Hope to see more next week.

    14. Illiterate or meaningless writing.

I'm glad to see someone keeping TT alive. It's always been a favorite of mine because you can say something substantive within a framework or theme.

  26. I share many of your pet peeves and I'm delighted to see some T-13ers are continuing the tradition. I've not participated for a while due to a variety of factors, but may start again soon. Until then I'll enjoy READING T-13s ;--)
    Hugs and blessings,

  27. One of my favourites is a combination... "Busy Background" which leads to "Unreadable Text"... because the text boxes are transparent... Ugh.

As for the ALL CAPS... reminds me of a cartoon where they talked about a shipment of keyboards from Dell systems a few years back where they (honestly - in real life) forgot to program the "Caps Lock"... they showed a drawing in one panel of "AOL Headquarters" with a word balloon coming out of a window saying, "WHY IS EVERYBODY WHISPERING?"

  28. Unintelligible includes people who can't write right (you're fine). I'm an English major, so I think that's part of it. I excuse the non-native speakers, but it's still difficult and if they're not learning anything, often they can be turned off quickly :-)

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm totally with you, especially with the music! I avoid MySpace at all costs.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I would be happy to set up a Thursday Thirteen.blogspot site if anyone needs me to. I wanna keep it going! It's my favorite meme. Thanks for putting up a Mr. Linky.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I meant to say I agree with all of your pet peeves!

    ReplyDelete
  32. That back button thingie is one of our pet peeves, too! It's really frustrating to have to open a new browser!

I'm really sorry I had to enable comment & word moderation. Loads of spam comments spoiled the free commenting, but please... don't let it stop you. I love every non-spam comment!
Thanks for visiting.
