Thirteen quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
Lord of the Rings is my all-time favourite book. Tolkien is my favourite author. In- and outside his books the man said some remarkable things! 1892 - 1973 "It's a job that's never started that takes the longest to finish."
"Little by little, one travels far."
"I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve."
"All that is gold does not glitter; not all those that wander are lost."
"If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world."
"What do you mean? Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good on this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?"
"Still round the corner there may wait, a new road or a secret gate."
"Courage is found in unlikely places."
"Some who have read the book, or at any rate have reviewed it, have found it boring, absurd, or contemptible, and I have no cause to complain, since I have similar opinions of their works, or of the kinds of writing that they evidently prefer."
"There is nothing like looking, if you want to find something. You certainly usually find something if you look, but it is not always quite the something you were after."
"To crooked eyes truth may wear a wry face."
"I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend."
"The world is full enough of hurts and mischance without wars to multiply them."

ReplyDeleteMaybe by the "little" in #2 he meant the Hobbits! :-)
ReplyDelete#5 is very true. And thanks for reminding me of #6--I always loved that quote, it's so much fun playing with language. :)

I love all of those i like reading Tolkien better than watching 'i only love thatwhich they defend'
ReplyDeleteI'm just as big as a Tolkein fan as you. I started reading his books when I was seven and have lost count of how many times I've read them. The movies are great, but the words...wow, thanks so much for compiling this list.
ReplyDeleteDon't throw things at me, but I'm probably the only person in the world who has never read a Tolkein book. Love the quotes.
ReplyDeletegreat list! I've del.icio.us'd them so I can use some of the quotes on my website later. :)

great unique tt! i'm a new tt'er and having so much fun finding lists.
ReplyDeleteI know a little girl who is currently researching the roots of the words for all of Tolkien's languages.
ReplyDeleteShe is 9 and in the 7th grade.
My TT is up, I enjoyed yours!
Oh I loved these! I bought my husband the LOTR set with The Hobbit, but he ended up selling it on ebay!! What a stinker. I should have known he'd never actually read the books. But he LOVED the movies so much!
ReplyDeleteThey're all great quotes, esp. #1. Thanks for printing them.
ReplyDeleteI'm starring these in my starred items in Reader. Tolkien was a peer of C S Lewis; they hung out together in the same pub and shared their writing. Yet I have NEVER read Tolkien! So thank you for this post.
ReplyDeleteI love these!!! Thanks for sharing them Tink, and happy TT!!!
ReplyDeleteTinkerbelle I thank you so very much for your kind words and that you will light a candle for me.
