TT #70: expensive cities

TT70

The thirteen cities with most expensive cost of living

Mercer's annual Cost of Living Survey covers 143 cities across six continents and measures the comparative cost of over 200 items in each location, including housing, transport, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment.
Base City is New York, USA (=100) which landed on 15th place. Due to the weak dollar no US-cities made the top rankings.
I give you the Top 13 of 2007:

  1. Moscow - Russia - 134.4
  2. London - United Kingdom - 126.3
  3. Seoul - South Korea - 122.4
  4. Tokyo - Japan - 122.1
  5. Hong Kong - China - 119.4
  6. Copenhagen - Denmark - 110.2
  7. Geneva - Switzerland - 109.8
  8. Osaka - Japan - 108.4
  9. Zürich - Switzerland - 107.6
  10. Oslo - Norway - 105.8
  11. Milan - Italy - 104.4
  12. St. Petersburg - Russia - 103.0
  13. Paris - France - 101.4

  5. I'm glad Tel Aviv isn't on the list, since I get paid in dollars I'm already getting clobbered quite badly enough!

  6. Luckily, I'm not moving to any of these cities! Although, things seem pretty expensive where I'm sittin'...

  7. Ugh. Once you mentioned to me that TA was in the top 50 I went back and looked - it's skyrocketed from #24 last year to 17(!!!) this year! Thankfully for me much of that is likely to be housing costs, which don't affect me since I own my flat. Thank goodness for small favors...

  8. I am really surprised that neither New York City or San Francisco did not make the cut because I know they are the most costly cities to live in stateside. Thanks for the info and Happy TT.

  10. Yikes! I'm so surprised Moscow is #1. I've only been to London on that list and it's hard with our slumping dollar for sure!

Interesting. I'm surprised that Moscow was the most expensive. I didn't know there was that Muscovites had that much disposable income.

  14. I still want to live in Paris. Isn't that selfish? Just a year... well maybe two.... I bet they make more money there.... sigh.

  15. I've been to London & Paris and they are definitely pricey!

Here in the continental U.S., my votes would go to NYC, S.F., San Diego, and Boston.

  39. The price of gas alone in many European countries would make most Americans (like myself) have a heart attack. We think what we are paying now is expensive, but we can't touch prices there. Thanks for the reminder.
