Crikey...

The Crocodile Hunter is dead... He died after being struck in the chest by a stingray's barb while he was filming a documentary in Queensland's Great Barrier Reef. It's hard to believe, but on the other hand... He constantly played with danger, although he always knew exactly what he was doing. He took calculated risks, but enormous risks nevertheless. The stingray must have felt threatened, because they only sting in defense; attacks on humans are rare.

My thoughts go out to his wife Terri, daughter Bindi (8) and son Bob (2). Through the television shows it almost feels as if we know them. Ron and I are big fans of Steve's programs. He leaves a wonderful legacy. He made Australia Zoo into a huge success and did a lot of good. A big loss...

  1. Yeah, I have very mixed feelings about this. Although I liked his programs, I didn't like his other projects. To mention one: he tried for a long time to get a permit for hourly helicopter flights around the Glasshouse Mountains. Which meant that one of our uncles (and his neighbours), who lives on a farm at the foot of Mount Beerwah, would have had a very noisy helicopter come over his house and land every hour! So, I totally supported the anti-Steve lobby in this. But having him die all of a sudden is a bit more than wished for.

  2. I think it is so terribly sad that he has died in such unusual circumstances. I always expected him to go in a croc attack, or snake bite,or something like that. But, a stingray, which are normally placid creatures... how bizarre. I guess he went doing something he loved. I feel terribly sad for his family, though. His kids are so young. My sympathy goes out to his family.

You will be sadly missed, but your memory shall live on. Keep fighting for all of the endangered animals that cannot fight for themselves. A good man, father, and catchy cry, “Crikey!” will always be remembered. Our thoughts are with the Terri and the children at this time.
