July

A lot has happened in July, still I didn't post on my blog. Why, you ask? Lots of reasons, all nonsense, all excuses... So better late than never, here's July in retrospective...

Ron and I went to Heartbonds Festival, a small-scale spiritual festival. Ron is part of the organizing team; he did practical things like first aid, electricity, technical stuff, etc. We arrived at Wednesday with the dogs and our new tent. Well, second-hand but new to us. ;-) Unfortunately Ron made a wrong move while lifting a table and he hurt his forearm muscles. He is right-handed and it was his left arm, but still he was very inconvenienced the rest of the festival. He still is now unfortunately...
Nevertheless we had a wonderful time with lots of old and new friends. The weather was great, sometimes a bit too hot for me but good for the festival. I attended several workshops, there was a labyrinth, an archery-range, market-stalls with great stuff, live music in the evening, great food and sooo much more. If you want to get an impression, just take a look at our pictures of the festival.

Of course we supported the Dutch national soccer team in the WorldChampionship 2014 in Brazil. A lot of people were very pessimistic, but our team did great! Louis van Gaal made great decisions and the team won a lot. My favourite was Arjen Robben, but of course Robin van Persie made the most beautiful goal of the tournament (see pic). We ended up 3rd. I think the team deserved more, but I may be biased...

And then there is the incident with Flight MH17, that was 'supposedly' shot down by a missile that was launched by Ukranian pro-Russia separatists. All people and animals aboard died; 195 of the 298 people were Dutch, so our nation is mourning... A lot has been written about it and I have my own thoughts about it... I think our government did its best to get the bodies over here to be identified and returned to their loved ones. A lot of coffins with remains arrived over a series of days. the victims and their next of kin were honoured in moving ceremonies that I watched in silence. On Wednesday July 23rd we had an official national day of mourning for the first time in decades.  Still, not all remains are recovered,  identification and investigations will probably take months. I sincerely hope investigators get the access they need and as much as possible can be recovered and investigated thoroughly. The next of kin need closure, and so does the rest of the world. My heart is sinking, but I can only hope for the best....

Oh no...

Today is the celebration of Queen's Day in the Netherlands. The Royal family was visiting Apeldoorn. Their open bus was making its way to the Loo palace. Suddenly a black Suzuki Swift breaks his way through the crowd crashing into "De Naald" monument.

It's not clear if this is an accident, an act of terrorism or something else. Fourteen people are wounded, the rumours talk about four deaths. The Royal family was not hurt in any way, but they are shocked. Queen Beatrix has expressed the sympathy of her family to the victims and their families.

The Mayor of Apeldoorn announced that the rest of the activities are cancelled and more cities in our country are following that example. Queen's Day will never be the same...

13.45 - Two deaths are confirmed...
15.45 - Press conference. 4 deaths, 5 seriously injured, 8 minor injuries. it happened on purpose. 1 male suspect, 38 years, native Dutch, in hospital at the moment. no suspicion of terrorism.
20.19 - A fifth death was announced.

May 1, 8.40 - The perpetrator has died from brain injuries tonight before he could explain why he did what he did.

Earth Hour is today!!

VOTE EARTH

In December 2009 world leaders meet in Copenhagen to agree on a post-Kyoto policy for tackling climate change. One billion people voting with their light switch during Earth Hour will create a powerful mandate for our leaders to take strong and decisive action on climate change. Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.

I'm switching off the lights tonight. What's your vote??

update 20.51u: The lights are off, the house is lit by candles. It gives a special atmosphere, warm and intimate. Not everyone understands (or wants to understand) why we are doing this. Ah well, we know why... We are the only ones in our street, pity! The neighbours must think our fuses have blown... ;-)

Updates

A few weeks ago I got a letter from the UWV, the organisation that pays my monthly disability allowance. I had to come for a re-examination and re-assessment of my condition. That was a big surprise. After the tests and the result in 2006 they told me they wouldn’t invite me again. The appointment was last Monday. When I got there, the doctor had read my file and was wondering out loud why I was invited at all. He thought it was because of a note his colleague made in 2006, that was misinterpreted by the administration department. He asked some things, made some notes and I was outside again in no time.

Next Tuesday I have an appointment in the CFS Centre for an exertion test. Afterwards I will get a portable monitor for 24 hours to observe my heart. It is part of the examinations the cardiologist wanted to do. I hope I’ll hear more about what they think is possible in treating my fatigue problem.

The Temple of Ara initiation has been cancelled for Beltane this year. There weren’t enough candidates in Italy after all, so the costs would rise substantially. We just can’t afford that. Because Ara Lowlands has 6 candidates we looked into the possibility of doing the initiations in The Netherlands or Belgium. We even considered going to New York, where Phyllis lives. Alas, at the moment none of those options are feasible. We’ll have to wait and discuss future plans. Maybe for later this year or early 2010, we’ll see.

Next Wednesday Ron has his first interview with the outplacement bureau. They called him last week; it was a very good talk. Ron told them how he feels and what he hopes they can do for and with him. Every day he leaves for work with leaden step. He doesn’t feel comfortable there anymore and the work they gave him is not exactly challenging. He has lost his drive and motivation, simply does what he has to do. That’s nothing like the “normal” Ron, who wants to show effort and devotion in his job. It hurts me to see him like this. He has so much to give, but they don’t want it anymore. Well, their loss!!!

She's not just a fairy, she’s a guardian angel

Last week Lonnie Lardner, grassroots filmmaker in Los Angeles, sent me an e-mail and told me about a very special, different documentary including Tinker Bell. My curiosity was stirred! I looked more into it and got more enthusiastic with every line I read. I'll tell you more.

"Angel in the Hood" is a documentary profiling two tough Latina girls from a gang neighbourhood, who have turned their lives around (attending college, working toward degrees in nursing and education). But the kicker to the story is: they are obsessed with Peter Pan's Tinker Bell; specifically, Disney's version of Tinker Bell. Both of Mexican descent, the girls see Tink as a guardian angel or personal spiritual guide. Their "tough-love" teacher tries to talk them out of their devotion, saying she's "a fairy going nowhere." But the girls stand firm in their conviction. The documentary follows their story for three years, their life-changing journey out of the ghetto and into adulthood through the inspiration of a most unlikely source.
You can read a lot more on the Angel in the Hood website. Don't forget to listen to the wonderful "Neverland", original music by Kyle Lardner.

“Angel in the Hood” will be featured in the first annual Hollywood “Feel Good Film Festival” this Saturday. The mission of the festival panel is to showcase “films with a positive message” that let you “leave the theater feeling good.”
The festival screening will be held at Hollywood’s historic Egyptian Theater on Hollywood Boulevard, just east of Highland, on Saturday, August 23rd at 1:30 pm. Unfortunately I'm too far away to be able to come, but if you are a Tink-fan too and live close enough to attend: it would mean so much to Lonnie if you could come and show your support. The film runs 50 minutes, and there will be a Q & A session after it screens.

Date: Saturday, August 23rd 2008
Time: 1:30pm
Place: Egyptian Theater, 6712 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90028

Tickets are $9 and may be purchased at the door or on line
Questions? Call Lonnie: (805) 490-7099, Chuck Mills: (818) 591-8252 or Sharon Lignier: (818) 300-7055

If you're going: please let me know and tell all about it!!

Amazing duck story in Spokane

I read the following story on one of my e-maillists. It's such a great story; I just had to share it here (with permission).

Joel is a loan officer at Sterling Bank in Spokane, WA. He works downtown in a second story office building, overlooking busy Riverside Avenue. Several weeks ago he watched a mother duck choose the cement awning outside his window as the uncanny place to build a nest above the sidewalk. The mallard laid nine eggs in a nest in the corner of the planter that is perched over 10 feet in the air. She dutifully kept the eggs warm for weeks and Monday afternoon all of her nine ducklings hatched.

Joel worried all night how the mamma duck was going to get those babies safely off their perch in a busy, downtown, urban environment to take to water, which typically happens in the first 48 hours of a duck hatching.

Tuesday morning, Joel came to work and watched the mother duck encourage her babies to the edge of the perch with the intent to show them how to jump off! The mother flew down below and started quacking to her babies above. In his disbelief Joel watched as the first fuzzy newborn toddled to the edge and astonishingly leapt into thin air, crashing onto the cement below.

He couldn't watch how this might play out. He dashed out of his office and ran down the stairs to the sidewalk where the first obedient duckling was stuporing near its mother from the near fatal fall. Joel looked up. The second duckling was getting ready to jump! He quickly dodged under the awning while the mother duck quacked at him and the babies above. As the second one took the plunge, Joel jumped forward and caught it with his bare hands before it hit the cement. Safe and sound, he set it by the mamma and the other stunned sibling, still recovering from its painful leap.

One by one the babies continued to jump to join their anxious family below. Each time Joel hid under the awning just to reach out in the nick of time as the duckling made its free fall. The downtown sidewalk came to a standstill. Time after time, Joel was able to catch the remaining 7 and set them by their approving mother.

At this point Joel realized the duck family had only made part of its dangerous journey. They had 2 full blocks to walk across traffic, crosswalks, curbs, and pedestrians to get to the closest open water, the Spokane River. The onlooking office secretaries then joined in, and hurriedly brought an empty copy paper box to collect the babies. They carefully corralled them, with the mother's approval, and loaded them up into the white cardboard container. Joel held the box low enough for the mom to see her brood. He then slowly navigated through the downtown streets toward the Spokane River, as the mother waddled behind and kept her babies in sight.

As they reached the river, the mother took over and passed him, jumping into the river and quacking loudly. At the water's edge, the Sterling Bank office staff then tipped the box and helped shepherd the babies towards the water and to their mother after their adventurous ride.
All nine darling ducklings safely made it into the water and paddled up snugly to mamma duck. Joel said the mom swam in circles, looking back toward the beaming bank workers, and proudly quacking as if to say: 'See, we did it! Thanks for all the help!'

Thankfully, one of the secretaries had a digital camera and was able to capture most of it (except the actual mid-air catching) in a series of photographs of which I made the slideshow above.

Dutch house cat adopts rejected red panda

(AP Photo/ Artis Zoo)A newborn Red panda from Artis Zoo in Amsterdam gets a special adoptive mother. After the cub was rejected by her mother, a domestic cat owned by one of the keepers took over the task of caring for the young panda. The cat now suckles the Red panda, in addition to its own four kittens. Within the European breeding programme, this is the first time that a Red panda has been suckled by a cat. Under the circumstances, the young panda is doing well. The animal constantly receives the greatest care, both from her keepers and from her adoptive mother, who lovingly treats the Red panda cub as one of her own. The baby panda was one of two cubs born to the Red panda female Gladys and her mate Werner. One cub unfortunately did not survive the first crucial days. This cub was already in a weakened condition when the two young pandas were first placed with the cat.
The Red panda, also known as the Lesser panda, lives in the bamboo forests of the Himalayas, as does its larger cousin the Giant panda. Pandas are an endangered species.

European Soccer Championship

The day we left for Belgium, June 17, was also the day of the last group match of the Dutch soccer team against the Romanians. We only had Belgian tv stations and they didn't broadcast it. Pity, but fortunately the results wouldn't matter that much, as The Netherlands had already reached the quarterfinals. We got the news through sms and phone: we had rounded off an impressive campaign with a third successive victory: 2-0. Okay, good news!

On June 21 we definitely wanted to see the quarter final against Russia. We went to Lier where several cafes had screens and/or televisions to watch the match. The first half we watched in a pool cafe. There was a big screen in the back, but in that area the music was too loud. In the front was a normal television, but we couldn't sit very comfortably there. The barkeepers weren't very sociable. In the break we looked for another place to watch the second half. Just across the street was another cafe where we were warmly welcomed and gladly watched the rest of the game. Well gladly... not about the game of course. Much to our regret the Dutch lost 1-3... :-( Disappointed we headed back to the cottage. The rest of the time in Belgium we didn't pay any attention to Euro 2008.

Tonight is the final between Germany and Spain. My bet is on Germany. May the best team win though!

Update 22.40u:
Wow, Spain is the new European Champion! Not undeserved I must say. It was an interesting match until the last second. It ain't over 'till it's over; you never know, especially with the German team. Schade Deutschland, alles ist vorbei... They earn respect though for reaching the final!

Kerstin Fritzl wants to see Robbie

The oldest child that Josef Fritzl fathered by his own daughter is on the road to recovery, has been reunited with her family and the first thing she asked for after a lifetime of being held in a dank cellar was to go to a Robbie Williams concert.
(...)
“I am especially proud that [she] could walk the distance to her new residence and into her new life,” Dr Reiter added. Ms Fritzl saw daylight for the first time in her life after she awakened in the intensive care ward of the Amstetten regional hospital. According to Dr Reiter, the first wish that she expressed to her carers was to go on a boat trip and to attend a Robbie Williams concert.
“Even immediately after she awakened and still had the tracheotomy intubation for the breathing assistance in her throat she would listen to Robbie Williams until 3am. I then would have to intervene for her to turn down the music and get some rest,” Dr Reiter said.

Halt Woman's Execution for 'Witchcraft'

To Those Who Share Our Deep Concern:
Please join us in calling for the immediate pardon and release of FAWZA FALIH [Falwah Faliz], a Saudi Arabian woman who has been sentenced to death by beheading for the alleged crime of "witchcraft". As Human Rights Watch has declared, the conviction of Fawza Falih is a travesty of justice.

A letter to His Royal Highness KING ABDULLAH has been drafted and signed by clergy and members of various faith traditions. The letter may be read online where you may also sign it. Please do so as soon as possible at: Fawza Falih Petition Online

Further information on the case is available at:
Please help to circulate this request for support as widely as possible -- time is of the essence.
I'm sorry to have to ask this, but PLEASE if you are Pagan or Wiccan, we would appreciate it if you do not make reference to that because, sadly, this will only make Fawza Falih's situation worse - it is the reason, after all, that she is sentenced to beheading. And when you post to e-lists or boards, please add that request.

Please join us in signing online, and help distribute this letter to others.
Thank you for your help!

Natalee Holloway - case solved?

This case got worldwide media attention for almost three years now and I followed it all that time. I just watched Peter R. de Vries' astonishing coverage in which he reveals how he got Joran van der Sloot's full confession. You can read the whole story here.
I was shocked by the way Joran told his story to a friend. He just sat there looking and acting completely indifferent. He didn't even check if she was really dead. He didn't even lose any sleep over it. He doesn't feel guilty. I don't have words for this... As Natalee's mother Beth said in the report: "I hope his living hell is about to begin."
I hope Beth and the rest of Natalee's family and friends will find a way to cope with this awful outcome. They have my deepest sympathy...

Not much online

I'm not much online these days, just for checking mail or for a quick look. So no Cats on Tuesday, no Thursday Thirteen, no updates this week. Don't worry, I'll be back! I'll explain.

Yesterday Ron read in the local newspaper, that his mother had died... He hasn't been feeling that well lately (still the burn-out, depression) and this was an almighty blow... We didn't have contact with his mother, but not because he didn't love her... He knew her health wasn't that good, but death was unexpected.
He called his sister(s) and in no-time all three of them were at our home. Their mother had made them promise not to inform Ron and his brother. Now that he had made contact he was more than welcome. Yesterday afternoon we helped sorting out the papers (quite a mess) and last night the family had a private meeting to say goodbye to her.
This morning we ordered a flower arrangement, tonight is the general condolence. Tomorrow at 2pm is the funeral.

It's a girl!!!

Our neighbour / friend Monique has a daughter! After a very difficult pregnancy of 34 weeks with a lot of problems and uncertainty whether the little one would make it she gave birth to a little girl. Her name is Dominique. She's premature, but everything seems to be okay. She weighs 1350 grams (almost 3 lbs).

Monique was admitted to hospital last Monday. Because her placenta didn't work properly she couldn't carry the baby until 40 weeks. This afternoon she had a C-section. Around dinnertime she called us, still a bit groggy but very happy!

Welcome to the world, Dominique!
Blessings on your day of birth
Your cycle begins anew
May happiness and good fortune
Be with you your whole life through!

Update Oct. 21: Here is a picture of Dominique next to Rons hand; we made it this afternoon.

Shock therapy in advertising?

This week Italian womenswear brand Nolita has caused a lot of commotion with their new and controversial campaign. The photographs of 27-year-old emaciated anorexia patient Isabelle Caro (a French actress) bear the legend 'No Anorexia'. You can see it here (Flash needed). The pictures were shot by the Italian photographer Oliviero Toscani, who in 1992 photographed a man dying of AIDS for a Benetton campaign. It's no coincidence the campaign is coinciding with the Milan Fashion Week. The size zero debate is very much alive!

Caro herself does not blame the fashion industry for her disease, from which she began to suffer at the age of 13, owing to a difficult childhood. She seems sincere in her hope that allowing her emaciated naked body to go on public display will help dispel any "romantic" ideas young girls might have about the condition. She writes a blog about her illness and says: "I've hidden myself and covered myself for too long. Now I want to show myself fearlessly, even though I know my body arouses repugnance. I want to recover because I love life and the riches of the universe. I want to show young people how dangerous this illness is."

The Nolita campaign has received backing from the Italian Ministry of Health. From the point of view of Italian health minister Livia Turco such publicity is a good thing. "The disturbing image of Isabelle Caro could open an original channel for communication and encourage people to shoulder their responsibilities in the area of anorexia," she said.

The reactions are reaching from positive to negative and everything in between. I have very mixed feelings about it. I'm not shocked by seeing the pictures, I've seen it in real life often enough. I am very glad though that I don't think it's beautiful or something to strive for anymore!!
For a lot of anorexia patients these kind of pics are nothing new also. They are displayed on every pro-ana site to glorify the "anorexic lifestyle". On the other hand seeing them in the streets on huge billboards and 2-page display in newspapers might be different from glancing at them in the privacy of their own home. I've been thinking what my own reaction would have been in my anorexic days, but I'm not sure. Sometimes shock therapy like this is the only thing that can cause a change or even revolution in behaviour and thinking.
I don't know...

What do you think??

Druid Podcast

Through Witches Weekly I heard about something unfair and in my eyes sick and cruel. I'll copy the synopsis from Lady Tawodi's log:

Druids have Equinox Ritual. Christians go “undercover” and record the ritual without the Druids knowledge or consent. These include Kirk Cameron from “Growing Pains.”
Christians put recording up on website as a podcast, being blatantly ignorant and full of bigotry.
Download or listen:
here (right-click and save link as)
A disrespect to those poor folks out at
Ravens Cry Grove, ADF.

I've listened to it and I'm baffled. I hope (and know) these so-called christians are not representative of Christians in general. The Christians I know don't break the law or ridicule another religion, even when they are not that comfortable with it. But I'm not naive either: I know there are groups that do those things... Just one word: sick!

9/11

It's 5 years ago, but I remember it like yesterday. Still know where I was, what I was doing, how I felt... Every time I see the footage it still feels surreal and unbelievable... That day I was glued to the television, again today. I watched the ceremonies, listened to each and every name spoken by relatives of victims. Very touching. My thoughts are with everyone affected. I'm just someone on the other side of the world, but I will never forget...

Crikey...

The Crocodile Hunter is dead... He died after being struck in the chest by a stingray's barb while he was filming a documentary in Queensland's Great Barrier Reef. It's hard to believe, but on the other hand... He constantly played with danger, although he always knew exactly what he was doing. He took calculated risks, but enormous risks nevertheless. The stingray must have felt threatened, because they only sting in defense; attacks on humans are rare.

My thoughts go out to his wife Terri, daughter Bindi (8) and son Bob (2). Through the television shows it almost feels as if we know them. Ron and I are big fans of Steve's programs. He leaves a wonderful legacy. He made Australia Zoo into a huge success and did a lot of good. A big loss...
